Rapid City, South Dakota is a city full of history, art, and warm hospitality. I spent my one day is this Black Hills town strolling among the iconic US President statues, wandering through the vibrant Art Alley, visiting the serene Chapel in the Hills, savoring a delicious meal at Firehouse Brewing Company, and relaxing at the historic Hotel Alex Johnson.
Morning: US President Statues
I began my day with a stroll along the streets of downtown Rapid City, where life-sized bronze statues of every U.S. President await. The statues are located in downtown Rapid City, South Dakota, along the city’s streets and sidewalks. This open-air “Gallery of Presidents” is accessible to the public 24/7, making it a popular attraction for both locals and tourists. This unique and educational outdoor attraction is perfect for history buffs and photo enthusiasts alike. Plaques accompany each statue, offering historical information about the President’s life, accomplishments, and contributions to the nation. It’s a must-visit destination that offers a deep connection to the nation’s past and its leaders.
Mid-Morning: Art Alley
Located in downtown Rapid City, Art Alley is a living canvas where local and visiting artists express themselves through colorful murals and street art. After checking out the US Presidents I made my way to this vibrant alleyway located between 6th Street and 7th Street, just south of Main Street. The ever-changing landscape of Art Alley is a testament to the city’s creative spirit. The alley is adorned with an ever-changing array of street art, murals, graffiti, and creative installations. Artists from the local community and beyond contribute to the evolving artwork, which can range from colorful and abstract pieces to social or political statements. Don’t forget your camera – you’ll want to capture these captivating works of art.
Lunch: Firehouse Brewing Company
For lunch, I headed to Firehouse Brewing Company, a historic fire station turned brewery and restaurant. Located in a charming 1915 firehouse, this establishment offers a menu of delicious pub fare and a variety of craft beers brewed on-site. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty burger, a fresh salad, or some comfort food, there’s something for everyone. Plus, the unique ambiance and friendly staff make for a delightful dining experience. I highly recommend grabbing a bite while you are still in downtown.
Afternoon: Chapel in the Hills
After lunch, I drove out to the serene Chapel in the Hills. Nestled in the Black Hills, this beautiful chapel is an authentic replica of the Borgund Stavkirke in Norway. The chapel was built in 1969 as part of a cultural exchange between South Dakota and Norway. It serves as a symbol of the enduring ties between the two regions and as a testament to the Norwegian heritage of many early settlers in the area. The interior of the chapel is as impressive as its exterior. It features intricately carved woodwork, including detailed replicas of Viking ships that hang from the ceiling.
While the chapel is a popular tourist attraction, it also serves as an active Lutheran church. The chapel is welcoming to visitors of all backgrounds and beliefs. It’s a place where people can appreciate the beauty of the architecture, the tranquility of the surroundings, and the cultural significance of the site.
The chapel’s location in the Black Hills provides breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. It’s an ideal spot for photography, especially during the changing seasons when the natural beauty of the area comes to life. The chapel’s unique architecture and serene setting make it a must-visit destination in Rapid City.
