I have some incredible friends and I love our trips together. They are always filled with adventure and laughter. My most recent girl’s trip was a weekend trip to Louisville to see Pink. While we were short on time, we spent one day soaking in the southern charm and sampling the world’s best bourbon in this gem on the Ohio River.
Where to Stay
We started our stay in Louisville checking into our rental located in one of the most historic downtown buildings, the Glassworks Building. Nicknamed, The Roxy, our condo provided the perfect place to relax and enjoy the skyline view. Designer decorated, it contained 4 Queen beds, a large comfortable couch, kitchen, and washer/dryer. It was well stocked and the host went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable. Located just one block from Main Street, The Roxy was in the perfect location to explore downtown on foot. I highly recommended this Airbnb for your stay in Louisville.
Blackbeard Espresso
We kicked off our day at Blackbeard Espresso, a local haunt that takes coffee seriously. We ordered our favorite coffee concoction and paired it with a delectable pastry to fuel our adventures ahead. Located at 718 W Main St, it was a short walk from our rental. If you stop in, I recommend the caramel macchiato as your morning pick-me up.
Whiskey Row
After breakfast, we headed straight to Whiskey Row. Wandering down Bourbon Row in downtown Louisville is like stepping into the beating heart of Kentucky’s bourbon legacy. The cobblestone streets echo with the sounds of distilleries, shops, brewpubs, and the unmistakable charm of this historic district. As we strolled along, each establishment seemed to call out. We wandered in and out of the shops as we made our way down Main Street. Even this early in the day, the ambiance was alive with the clinking of glasses, laughter pouring out from vibrant bars, and the warm glow of neon signs.
Merle’s Whiskey Kitchen
As midday approached, we made our way to Merle’s Whiskey Kitchen, a hidden gem in downtown Louisville that seamlessly combines Southern comfort food with a vast selection of fine whiskies. Nestled in a historic building, the rustic charm of Merle’s creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. We settled into our seats, we perused the menu as we took in our surroundings. We settled on some chicken wings and several sides. Every bite was a harmonious symphony of flavors. We washed down our lunch with one of their signature cocktails. The staff’s friendly demeanor added to the welcoming ambiance, making Merle’s Whiskey Kitchen not just a meal but a sensory experience that captures the essence of Louisville’s culinary and bourbon heritage. Whether you’re a local or a traveler passing through, Merle’s is a lunchtime haven that encapsulates the spirit of the South in every delectable bite.
Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory
After lunch we swung by the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, where baseball history comes to life. Take a guided tour to witness the making of the iconic Louisville Slugger bats and even hold a bat used by baseball legends. It’s a home run for sports enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
Peerless Distillery
No trip to downtown Louisville is complete without a visit to a distillery. We made our way to Peerless Distillery, a haven for bourbon enthusiasts. Tucked away in the historic Whiskey Row district, Peerless Distillery stands as a testament to the revival of a family legacy dating back to the Prohibition era. The distillery tour is a captivating journey through the meticulous process of bourbon production, from the sourcing of grains to the slow and careful aging in charred oak barrels. The aroma of mash and the sight of gleaming copper stills evoke a sensory experience that embodies the essence of bourbon craftsmanship. The tasting room offers a chance to savor the rich, complex flavors of Peerless Bourbon, a product of dedication and time-honored tradition. After our tasting, we made our purchases and headed back to our condo to drop off our purchases.
Churchill Downs Museum
After resting up briefly, we ventured to the iconic Churchill Downs. Located on the hallowed grounds of the legendary racetrack, the Churchill Downs Museum immerses visitors in the thrilling world of horse racing, particularly the renowned Kentucky Derby. Exhibits showcase the evolution of the Kentucky Derby, featuring memorabilia from past races, legendary jockeys, and the majestic thoroughbreds that have left an indelible mark on the sport. We enjoyed the interactive displays that allowed us to virtually experience the rush of the race. Whether you’re a seasoned racing enthusiast or a casual observer, the Churchill Downs Museum offers a captivating journey through the heart and soul of one of the most celebrated events in American sports history.
Muhammad Ali’s Childhood Home
Before heading back to our condo to get ready for our show, we made one more stop. Muhammad Ali’s childhood home serves as a poignant reminder of the humble beginnings of the boxing legend. Nestled in the historic West End neighborhood, the small, single-story house at 3302 Grand Avenue is where a young Cassius Clay, before adopting the name Muhammad Ali, spent his formative years. The modest dwelling, now a cherished historical site, provides visitors with a glimpse into the early life of the heavyweight champion. Stepping inside, you’re transported back to the 1940s, surrounded by the simplicity of the Clay family’s home. The exhibit showcases family photographs, personal mementos, and artifacts that paint a vivid picture of Ali’s upbringing. Visiting Ali’s childhood home is not just a journey through history; it’s an opportunity to connect with the roots of a global icon whose impact reaches far beyond the boxing ring.
