A Day at Custer State Park: Buffalo and Friendly Donkeys

/

I recently got to spend a day at the breathtaking Custer State Park in South Dakota, and it was a day full of unforgettable encounters with wildlife and natural beauty.

Custer State Park

The Buffalo Encounter

The day began with the rising sun casting a warm, golden glow over the Black Hills. I set out on the park’s scenic Wildlife Loop Road, a route renowned for its abundant wildlife sightings. It didn’t take long for the main attraction to appear – a buffalo herd grazing near the road. Traffic came to a standstill as we marveled at these majestic creatures.

I couldn’t resist the urge to snap a few photos, but it’s crucial to remember that these wild animals should be admired from a safe distance. Buffalo might look calm, but they are unpredictable, and it’s important to respect their space.

Donkey Encounter

I continued my journey through the park and made a special stop to feed the donkey herd known as the “Begging Burros.” The donkeys at Custer State Park are quite the characters. Known for their friendly and inquisitive nature, they’re always up for a snack. Armed with a loaf of bread, I headed to the designated feeding area.

As soon as I parked, the donkeys approached with their big, soulful eyes and long ears. It was an absolute joy to hand-feed them and watch their gentle interactions with visitors. These donkeys are a beloved part of the park’s history, and they’ve been a favorite attraction for generations of visitors.

Scenic Drive and Sunset

I left the donkeys and continued the drive along the Wildlife Loop. As the afternoon sun started to dip lower in the sky, I navigated my way to Iron Mountain Road, known for its pig-tail bridges, and then to Needles Highway, known for its narrow, winding roads and iconic tunnels that frame stunning vistas. Needles Highway offered awe-inspiring views of unique rock formations, including the famous Needle’s Eye, which is truly a marvel of nature. As I made my way towards the park exit, I passed by several deer. It was the perfect way to end an extraordinary day at Custer State Park.
