After a restful night at the charming Dalkell Cottages in Tyndrum, we woke up to a hearty breakfast to fuel us for the day ahead. The cottage had a cozy atmosphere that made us feel right at home, and the warm hospitality of the owners made it the perfect spot to relax and prepare for the next leg of our West Highland Way adventure.
Breakfast at Dalkell Cottages
Dalkell Cottages is a lovely retreat for walkers, offering spacious and well-equipped rooms. Breakfast was provided in the main house, and we couldn’t have asked for a better start to the day. The spread was simple yet satisfying: freshly baked bread, local jams, creamy butter, eggs, and sausages. The strong, aromatic coffee was the perfect companion to the meal, helping us shake off the sleepiness and get ready for the next stretch of trail.
A Gorgeous Walk from Tyndrum to Inveroran
The West Highland Way from Tyndrum to Inveroran is one of the most picturesque stretches of the entire trail. In fact this may have been my favorite day. As we set off, the weather was sunny, and the lush Scottish countryside around us was breathtaking. The path took us through tranquil woodlands, along rolling hills, and past stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
The route is around 7 miles (11 km) long, but it felt like much more when you take in the sweeping landscapes and the peaceful atmosphere. It’s a relatively easy section of the trail, making it an enjoyable walk even with the miles starting to add up over the past few days.
Lunch at the Bridge of Orchy Hotel
After a few hours of walking, we arrived at the Bridge of Orchy Hotel, the perfect spot for a lunch break. The small, cozy hotel is a popular stop for hikers, and its welcoming vibe was just what we needed after a few miles on the trail. We sat down in the busy pub area and ordered lunch, which turned out to be the ideal comfort food for a weary traveler: hearty sandwiches, crispy fries, and a warming Hotty Toddy.
The Hotty Toddy, a comforting combination of whiskey, hot water, lemon, and honey, was the perfect drink to soothe our tired muscles and keep us energized for the rest of the hike. We enjoyed the warmth of the pub and the lively chatter around while we rested in preparation for the remainder of our day. The atmosphere was relaxed, and we could tell that this spot was a favorite among hikers making their way along the West Highland Way.
Arriving at the Inveroran Hotel
After a final stretch of walking, we arrived at the Inveroran Hotel, our accommodations for the night. Nestled in a quiet and picturesque spot between Loch Tulla and the surrounding mountains, the Inveroran Hotel has an old-world charm that immediately captured our attention. The hotel’s rustic exterior and cozy, welcoming interior make it feel like a hidden gem along the trail.
The hotel bar is one of its highlights, with a warm, inviting atmosphere where you can kick back after a long day of walking. The friendly staff served up some well-earned drinks, and we enjoyed chatting with fellow travelers about our experiences so far on the West Highland Way and around Scotland. It was a lovely opportunity to connect with other travelers who were happily sharing their experiences and making recommendations for future trips.
Dinner at the Inveroran Hotel
As the evening settled in, we made our way to the dining room for dinner. The restaurant at the Inveroran Hotel is known for serving up traditional Scottish fare, and we were eager to see what was on offer. The menu featured comforting options that were perfect after a long day of walking.
I opted for the marinated olives as my starter and the steak and ale pie with mash potatoes, a classic Scottish dish that never disappoints, for my main course. The olives were some of the best I have ever had and steak and ale pie was cooked to perfection.
The evening felt like the perfect way to unwind after another satisfying day on the West Highland Way. The Inveroran Hotel offers not just a place to stay, but a true Scottish experience, complete with warm hospitality, delicious food, and a chance to recharge for the final days of our journey.
