If you’re planning a trip to the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota, there are two iconic landmarks you absolutely can’t miss: Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Monument. I recently had the chance to explore these monumental wonders both by day and by night, and I’m thrilled to share my experience with you.
Crazy Horse Monument: A Work in Progress
Our day began at the Crazy Horse Memorial, a testament to the rich heritage of Native Americans. Carved into the Thunderhead Mountain, this monument is dedicated to the famous Lakota warrior, Crazy Horse. When completed, it will be the world’s largest sculpture, dwarfing even Mount Rushmore.
Walking through the visitor complex, we learned about the incredible vision of sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and the ongoing work to bring his dream to life. The Native American Cultural Center adds depth to the experience, providing insight into the culture and history of the Lakota Sioux people. We were lucky enough to catch a traditional Native American hoop dance at the Crazy Horse Monument. The colorful hoops whirled and twirled, telling stories of Native American legends and traditions. It was a mesmerizing experience that added a deep layer of cultural richness to our adventure.
Outside the visitor center there is a large patio area to gaze upon the massive Crazy Horse face carved into the mountain. It’s a humbling sight and a poignant reminder of the enduring spirit of Native Americans.
Crazy Horse Memorial Logistics
The Crazy Horse Memorial is open year-round but hours may vary depending on the season. Admission is no more than $35 a vehicle depending on the vehicle type and the number or passengers. Optional tours are available but are not included in the admissions price. Visitors can take the rustic bus ride to the base of the mountain for $5 a person.
Mount Rushmore: A Tribute to American Presidents
I ended my day at Mount Rushmore, often dubbed the “Shrine of Democracy.” This colossal sculpture, carved into the granite face of the Black Hills, features the faces of four legendary U.S. Presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. As you approach the avenue leading to the monument, you can’t help but feel a profound sense of patriotism.
The 60-foot-high faces are meticulously carved, and learning about the history and craftsmanship behind this monument is a fascinating experience. The Visitor Center provides a wealth of information, including exhibits, films, and ranger-led programs. Don’t forget to explore the Presidential Trail for up-close views and grab a seat for the nightly lighting ceremony – it’s a touching tribute to the nation’s history. The monument takes on a completely different ambiance when illuminated by a soft golden light against the dark South Dakota sky. The nightly lighting ceremony is a must-see event.
As the sun sets and the stars begin to twinkle, the monument comes to life in a breathtaking display. The patriotic music and the slow lighting of each president’s face create a sense of reverence and awe. It’s a powerful reminder of the values and leadership that these presidents represented.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is open year-round but hours may vary depending on the season. Mount Rushmore National Memorial does not have an entrance fee but a fee is required to park in the parking facility. Parking fees may be paid with cash or most credit cards.
Tips for Your Visit
- Timing Matters: Visit early in the day to explore the monuments and return in the evening for the lighting ceremonies.
- Park Pass: If you plan on visiting multiple national parks in the area, consider getting the America the Beautiful Pass – it’ll save you money. This pass is not accepted at the Crazy Horse Memorial.
- Respect the Culture: When visiting the Crazy Horse Monument, take the time to learn about and appreciate Native American culture.
- Pack Essentials: Sunscreen, water, comfortable walking shoes, and a camera – you’ll want to capture these moments.
